John Zorn, At the Gates of Paradise (Tzadik): Rarely will a CD cover feature artwork by the Romantic visionary William Blake, but this luminous, incandescent tribute composed by Zorn to the great man makes timelessness almost tactile. The music literally glows. Mystical, yet down to earth. Simplicity incarnate, yet delivered with beguiling complexity and intriguing ebbs and flows by four of Zorn’s favourite musicians.
The trenchant keyboardist John Medeski, of Medeski, Martin & Wood, and Kenny Wolleson on vibes create magical chime-like harmonies and fiendish counterpoints, while drummer Joey Baron and bassist Trevor Dunn weld everything together. There’s as much philosophy here as there are uplifting and ever-shifting melodies: Let there be light! This is one of Zorn’s most easy-listening – and delightfully profound – works.
