John Zorn, At the Gates of Paradise (Tzadik): Rarely will a CD cover feature  artwork by the Romantic visionary William Blake, but this luminous, incandescent  tribute composed by Zorn to the great man makes timelessness almost tactile. The  music literally glows. Mystical, yet down to earth. Simplicity incarnate, yet  delivered with beguiling complexity and intriguing ebbs and flows by four of  Zorn’s favourite musicians.

The trenchant keyboardist John Medeski, of Medeski, Martin & Wood, and  Kenny Wolleson on vibes create magical chime-like harmonies and fiendish  counterpoints, while drummer Joey Baron and bassist Trevor Dunn weld everything  together. There’s as much philosophy here as there are uplifting and  ever-shifting melodies: Let there be light! This is one of Zorn’s most  easy-listening – and delightfully profound – works.
